Christmas Family Update, 2008

Hello!  It’s been another action-packed year here for us.

Millie is a very busy two and half year old.  She spends her time accompanying her mom to playgroups, swimming, story and rhyme time and going to friends’ houses to play.  She is still a real charmer, talking a mile a minute and now says absolutely everything.  The next big challenge will be using the potty- she doesn’t know it yet, but it is her new year’s resolution.

Libby started school full-time in September and is thriving.  She is very serious about learning to read, constantly reminding us to help her with her homework.  She loves school and her friends there and comes home every day with detailed stories of her adventures there.  She is also taking swimming lessons and has gotten a lot more water confidence.  She and Millie get along well- they especially love pretending, creating their own schools, camps, ships, etc with all their stuffed animals and dolls.

After 11 years at ESI, Gareth learned in September that he was being laid off, which came as a huge shock to all of us.  He immediately set to work looking for another position, and he is looking forward to starting his new job at Synectics in Sheffield on December 15.  Everyone at ESI continues to think very highly of Gareth, but unfortunately in this economic climate no one is safe.  He continues to play guitar and bass in the church worship band and helps to lead the youth group.

Kat is still working full-time as a mom, but has started to take on more volunteer work as well.  She is helping to run the playgroup at school once a week, is serving as a school governor and became churchwarden in March.  She also took an Open University class in creative writing and is hoping to write something publishable very soon.

We did get several fantastic family holidays this year.  We spent two weeks in France at the beginning of the summer, then had four weeks in Michigan in July/August (including one week on the beach in Saugatuck), then came back to England to go to Grapevine camping with friends from church followed by five days’ camping with Gareth’s parents in Suffolk.  It was great to spend time out as a family, as well as to enjoy our family and friends in Michigan and have quality time with friends and family here.  Kat and the girls will be back in Michigan for four weeks next summer, with Gareth hoping to join them for the last two weeks.  Further plans are temporarily on hold until Gareth gets settled into his new job.

We hope you and your loved ones are happy and well and enjoy many blessings in the year to come.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,

Gareth, Kat, Libby & Millie

Job Update...

As many of you know, back at the start of October I was made redundant from my job of 11 years (ESI). It has been a long struggle in a difficult job market - but I have just accepted employment from a company South of Sheffield called Synectics (www.synx.com). I will be starting on December 15th and will be developing software for video security systems.

Christian Family Portrait, 2008

Once again, our family decided to torture the children by dressing them in colour coordinated outfits and making them stay still for an hour.... Here is the result...
Seriously - what a great family photo.

Ashover Rock

As a follow on to last week's walk in the woods - this week we went for a walk to Ashover Rock. Yet another scene of one of my accidents...

Big Girl Bed

That's it - we can now finally give our cot away!

Return to the scene...

Who would have thought that 4 1/2 years later, I would be returning to the scene of my (idiotic) accident with my 4 year old daughter (Libby). 4 1/2 years ago, in a moment of stupidity I decided I would take my bike over a jump which I used to do when I was a kid. I didn't manage to get enough speed and ended up falling backwards and breaking my arm.

This pain paled into insignificance compared to the roasting I received from a heavily pregnant wife...

Happy Birthday To Me...

The girls very kindly baked me a birthday cake and sang Happy Birthday to me. Can't imagine why they want to celebrate my acceleration towards 40...

Our Home for the Last 2 Weeks..

We have now arrived back after two great weeks in the Vendee region of France. The weather was pretty good - we had sun for at least part of every day. We enjoyed camping together, time on the beach and in the pool. We also visited the Zoo in 'Les Sables' and the Aquarium in 'La Rochelle'. I will try to post a slide show later - for now, here is a picture showing our 'home from home' - on washing day of all days...

Heading Back to "La Tranche"

In just a couple of days we will be heading off to the beautiful seaside town of "La Tranche sur Mer" in France. We went there in 2005 when Libby was just over a year old and it was great. We will be camping and the campsite is within walking distance of the beach, the town and the supermarket. We can't wait... Shame we have to drive 4 hours, take a 4 hour ferry and then drive another 4 hours to get there!!!

File Randomiser

Ever have an mp3 player or digital photo frame that you wish had a decent random/shuffle feature? Here is a utility that I wrote to solve this problem. Simply point it at a folder full of files, click "shuffle" and then "copy. This will copy and rename the files to the folder that you set. The files will be renamed 0000, 0001, 0002 etc. This will ensure that the files are played back in the newly shuffled order. Click here to download a free copy.

The Trampoline Finally Gets Built

Just 3 short hours later and lots of aching muscles - here is the trampoline that Libby and Millie had for their birthdays. They love it - if only it would rain a bit less often.

Rockschool Grade 3 - Download

Here is the second piece I studied for my Rockschool Grade 3 exam, "Download". Again, I wanted to make a record of this before I forget how to play it.

This time I decided to play using a "Brian May Red Special" guitar running through a "Digitech Brian May Red Special" effects pedal. So - there you have it - I have now admitted that I am a massive Queen fan...

Singing Happy Birthday Once More

I know it's hard to believe that anyone could have Happy Birthday sung to them this many times - but at least this one was on Libby's actual birthday.

Libby Turns 4

Wow - I can't believe that Libby is now 4. It feels like she is 14 most of the time...

Rockschool Grade 3 - Hazi Taxi

I recently took the "Rockschool" Grade 3 guitar exam. There are several parts to the exam including improvisation, scales and music theory - but the main part involves playing 3 pieces chosen from a possible 6.

I have now started studying the Grade 4 pieces, so I decided to record myself playing the Grade 3 pieces before I forget how to play them. I also wanted a way to be able to look back and see progress. So - here is my first piece, "Hazi Taxi".

Happy Birthday Millie

JibJab

Gareth recently acquired a habit of creating JibJab videos of family members. Click here to see a hilarious disco sequence...

Millie's Birthday

Last Friday was Millie's second birthday - can't believe she is now 2 years old !! And now sleeping so well that we actually had to set an alarm to be up in time for her to open presents before Libby went to nursery...

Later in the day we enjoyed a birthday tea with Jennie, Nigel and Aiden and Millie's Grandma and Grandad.
